"I can get a snare going in like 20 seconds with this thing and the compressor is SICK on this!"

The S-Quick strip is an easy to use channel strip based on the sound of one of the most popular channel strips in all of mixing, making it the perfect plugin to throw on a track if you’re looking to get results fast!

Module Overview

INPUT

The Preamp section gives you a Polarity Flip button, a Gain knob to dial in the amount of saturation, a saturation button to switch between two circuits of saturation.

When off, the saturation will be subtle. When on, the saturation will be dense and heavy with a slightly brighter tone!

This section also includes a highpass filter button which when on engages a filter at 75Hz.

EQ

The EQ section contains two knobs and two buttons. The two buttons switch between a bell curve and a shelf.

For the high-frequency section, the bell is at 2kHz and the shelf is at 8kHz.

For the low-frequency section, the bell is at 200Hz and the shelf is at 120Hz.

COMP

The compressor section contains just one knob (threshold).

Use this knob to dial in compression from the fixed settings.

You can also engage auto makeup to compensate for the drop in signal when using extreme settings.

The fixed compressor settings are Attack - 5ms, Release - 300ms, Ratio - 4:1.

TRANSIENT DESIGNER

The Transient Designer section is another knob module.

Turning the knob clockwise will enhance the transients leading to a punchier sound.

Turning the knob counter-clockwise will remove some of the attack and punch of the transients and soften the sound.

EXTRA CONTROLS

The Extra Controls section includes:

Saturation knob to control the level of harmonic saturation in the strip.

Sidechain Filter for the compressor to allow the low-end frequencies to pass through untouched.

Input and Output knobs to control the gain going in and out of the plugin.

And just like that, I’m a rich, phat, SSL owner.

Instead of ‘S-Quick’ they should’ve called this beauty ‘Smart Sound Legit’. Geddit? SSL? Because this is the digital recreation of a very nice, very fancy (very expensive) channel strip for the price of a beer and burger. I actually got mine for even less. You might think “I have every compressor and EQ ever, including the ‘official’ ones - why do I need this?”, which is what I thought too. However if you want exceptional, reliable results fast, and don’t like reading manuals (or pretending to know what you’re doing - or if the two dozen parameters on your average channel strip make your eyes water), get this. The compressor does the job on everything from percussion to bass, and the low cut is often exactly what you need to get that low end to sit right in a mix. The high and low eq are often all you need to sweeten and/tame that sound, and the one **** transient and saturation controls are similarly immediate and quality. You have everything you need to get that sound to punch harder; the transient designer even does fun things if pushed in the other direction, akin to an expander (but don’t quote me on this). And how does this thing have a graphical display? This is the sort of thing that makes people love Kiive. It’s just a lovingly crafted, fun, and immediate plugin. It also does magical things to bass and kicks and snares. Just turn up the high EQ on all 3 and prepare to grin. Again, you can get sounds out of this thing that your fancy channel strip might struggle with; if only because fewer controls can sometimes give you faster results. Limitations breed creativity, especially when you’re at the mixing stage. Does every track really need a multi-band compressor and an 8 band EQ? Gate? What is a gate anyway?

So yeah, this thing makes me feel warm and cozy and I have a grin on my face everytime I use it, because I know it’ll give me qualitative and quantitative results, and I won’t be tweaking for the sake of tweaking. It feels like an instrument. That is all.

Suggestions? The low cut is so good, I want a high cut. Hmm, how about a mid band? Won’t add too much to the complexity, and might even expand the sonic palette. Monomaker? Ditto. Stereo spread? Yes please.

Kudos, Kiive. This is a keeper.
